Getting to London Airports
How do you usually get to the airport?
Here is some information on the 5 London airports and suggestions on how to access them using various modes of transport. They have been calculated from the city centre and may differ depending on where you are travelling from.
London City Airport:
- Smallest but by far the best airport to fly from! DLR train stops right there and is £1.50 (unless you’re coming from an underground, then will be around £2.40)
Stansted Airport:
- Train costs around £19 from Liverpool St and takes just under an hour. Make sure you buy a ticket as you cannot use your oyster/debit card to tap on and off.
- Buses go from Victoria, Liverpool St, Paddington, Kings Cross and Stratford. The quickest is from Stratford and takes 40 mins. Tickets range from £1-10 on the easy bus website. National express or Airport bus express are the carriers.
- Uber/Cab to central London will be £60-80.
Luton Airport:
- Trains from London Blackfriars/London Bridge/Kings Cross (and some others) will cost around £17. From the train station, you need to get on a 5-7 minute bus to get to the airport. Of you purchase your train ticket on the Trainline app it will include the bus. Otherwise the bus is £2.40.
- Bus lines are Golders Green and Brent Cross. Both buses also stop at Finchley Rd, Baker St, Marble Arch and Victoria station.
- Uber is £60-70 from central London.
Gatwick Airport:
- Trains from London Victoria, London Bridge/Blackfriars/Kings Cross will cost around £11. From London Bridge is 30 minutes. This is the same train that stops at Luton (train to Bedford).
- The bus carriers are National Express and goes to Victoria, Fulham Rd, Vauxhall, Heathrow, Stockwell and Streatham. Again, book these through the easy bus website for the next rates.
- Uber from central London is around £80.
Heathrow Airport:
- The underground goes directly to Heathrow and stops at all terminals. You need to take the Piccadilly line (navy blue) there. As the airport is in zone 6 prices will vary but from central London will cost £3.10.
- Heathrow express goes into Paddington in 15 minutes and costs £22-25. Unless you’re staying in Paddington, I think this is a tourist trap.
- Buses are not an option. The bus from Gatwick goes to Heathrow then continues outside London. The underground is your best option.
- Uber from central London is £40-50.
